What a Move to Martinsville Has to Offer

An independent city in Virginia, Martinsville is home to roughly 14,000 residents and is the county seat of Henry County although Martinsville is a separate jurisdiction. The city was founded by Joseph Martin, an American Revolutionary War general and explorer. He was good friends with American patriot Patrick Henry, after whom Henry County is named.

Martinsville was a center of production for plug tobacco for many years, and Henry Country was known as "the plug tobacco capital of the world." Ultimately, many of these businesses were bought out by American tobacco giants R.J. Reynolds and the American Tobacco Company, which fought the U.S. government in historic anti-trust battles.

Besides tobacco, furniture-making was another industry that dominated the economy in Martinsville. Many furniture makers still exist in the region. In 1941, DuPont opened a large nylon plant in Martinsville, and the city became a center for the production of textiles. Today, these industries have largely moved offshore, and Martinsville is attempting to refocus economic development on high-technology and manufacturing.

Historic sites in Martinsville include the John Waddey Carter House, the Martinsville Novelty Corporation Factory, Beaver Creek Plantation, the Dry Bridge School, the Fayette Street Historic District, the Martinsville Historic District, the East Church Street-Starling Avenue Historic District, the Little Post Office, Martinsville Fish Dam and Scuffle Hill, all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Virginia Museum of Natural History, which is affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution, is located in Martinsville, as is the Piedmont Arts Association, a nonprofit art museum connected with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

The Martinsville Speedway, the shortest NASCAR stock car racing track, is located just outside the city in nearby Ridgeway. NASCAR hosts two races annually at the track as part of its Sprint Cup Series.

  • I moved several times with my husband's company, andI was very pleased with the crew at NorthAmerican van lines they were very helpful and easy to work with.
